I just finished this book and found it to be well written. It held my interest from start to finish. Really gives new insight into the slave trade during the late 1600's. The setting is mainly on the island of Curacao and surrounding area-not the US.The story centers around young Martin de By and his 2 sisters who are orphaned when a hurricane devastates the island of Curacao. At the age of 15,with minimal training, he becomes a doctor aboard a slave ship in the West Indies. Martin's independence and his youthful courage in challenging the inhuman practices of the era, make him a memorable hero. Easy to read-larger print.
