The study of Indonesian history has until today prioritized the series of events occurring on land, although in reality more than half of the Indonesian Republic's territory consists of sea. this also means that a huge part of the experiences and activities pertaining to archipelagic filks have gone unnoticed in the past and has escaped the observation and research of our nation's historians.
During the period of the Dutch East India Company's rule of the Spice Islands, Prince Nuku of Tidore stands out as the local hero who opposed the VOC's oppressive trade monopoly. This study analyzes how he succeeded in regaining independence for the Sultanate of Tidore by creating an alliance with the English and his Malukan and Papuan adherents.
